Xu Shiyang (CS Year 4) has embarked on The Broadcast News Navigator (BNN),where it is a web based system that incorporates image, speech and text processing to support information retrieval from broadcast news videos. It transforms video access from sequential to direct search, allowing users to do text based query to retrieve news stories based on a particular keyword or topic. Using this novel approach, users are able to access their favourite news stories much faster than the conventional way of watching news video. In addition, the BNN also provide features such as summarization of news story and subtitles translation which enhance user-friendliness. If the user types in “president” in the query box, they are provided access to all the news stories that contain the word “president”. Each news story contains a headline, a short summary of the story, the category that it belongs, and video links where the keywords are found at the specific point of the video.
