YOGA, AND/ OR PROTEST...PUTTING THE KINGDOM FIRST... I posted this because of two facebook friends, both powerful women yoga teachers, living and teaching in dense neighborhoods. Kristen Krash posted what I felt to be an a very important post about how yoga teachers are leaving the field for political and social issues. I dont really understand what the two have to do with each other, or why anyone would want to mix them, other than, as a teacher you are in a position to influence people, for good or ill. As a yoga teacher I feel people come to me to get away from, and wash themselves of all social controversy. I feel it my responsibility to help them get to that place, where you are un-touched by any earthly concerns. Then from that place we engage the world if we are called to it. Ill post my answer to her in comments: below this. Then another great teacher, Siri Rishi Kaur, posted this during the Ferguson protests... I love what this young man says...My answer is the same, in different language. To me, this is where Yoga takes you. He quotes Jesus at the end. I want to add another quote Put the Kingdom of heaven FIRST...then everything else falls into place...To me, practicing full consciousness yoga is to put the Kingdom first.....Without that...even with good intentions, we just constantly get sucked in and become part of the problem...instead of ourSelves being the solution..... Thanks to both Kristen and Siri Rishi...you both inspire me...
