YOUNG ILOCANO DEBATERS TO COMPETE AT THE FEM DEBATE CUP Twelve teams composed of young Ilocano debaters from different colleges and universities in the province are set to showcase their exceptional talents and expertise in the Ferdinand E. Marcos (FEM) Debate Cup. The competition, which is part of the celebration of President Marcos’ 97th birthday, is organized by the Provincial Education Department and Sirib Youth Office. The debates eliminations will be held on September 8-9 at the Northwestern University College of Arts and Sciences while the finals will be on September 10 at the Laoag City Auditorium. A TRIBUTE TO APO LAKAY The debate cup is a tribute to the late President Marcos or Apo Lakay who, at a young age, already excelled in the field of rhetoric and became one of the greatest debaters during his time. His brilliance is a great inspiration to Ilocanos, especially the young for upholding the importance of bringing out their powerful voices to raise issues that could change the community. The event thus, is a celebration of Apo Lakay’s great contribution to the Ilocano as well as Filipino consciousness. Keen in upholding Ilocano skills and talents, Governor Imee Marcos encourages the youth to discover and enhance their potentials in the field and keep Apo Lakay’s spirit alive throughout generations. Furthermore, the event is expected to gather and unite more young Ilocanos this year and increase their awareness on both provincial and national issues that need to be addressed in the future. The competition is open to all, especially the youth who aspires to engage in certain issues as well as to pursue careers related to the field. The first intercollegiate debate series held last year named the Mariano Marcos State University-College of Education (MMSU-CTE) Team A as its Champion with MMSU-Batac Team B as first runner up, Northwestern University Team A as second runner up and Divine Word College of Laoag Team A as third runner up. The Best Speaker and Debater titles were both awarded to James Ceasar Ventura of MMSU-CTE Team A. “The debate built not only me but many other Ilocano youth. It became a fun, exciting and challenging opportunity for us to share our viewpoints and ideas with many other brilliant youth. It was worth it,” Ventura said, expressing his eagerness to have more debate competitions such as this.
