clean living under difficult circumstances ... i am only three pages in and already in the flow ... heres a sneak preview of how my head works sometimes: The massive influx of overseas soldiers and airmen obviously brought with it a massive influence of ideas, cultures, fashions, music, writings and just about everything else which only added more and more to the already over-brimming cultural melting-pot that these isles have become throughout history. The Jamaicans who were imported into the country to rebuild it after the war had introduced Reggae, the Yanks had brought Blues, Gospel, American Folk, Rock n Roll, Jazz and a plethora of other music styles and there were clubs and cafés all over the country dancing to a different beat and escaping the orchestral overtures of the quintessentially English composers. Its youth were now sipping Pepsi-Cola through straws, drinking Italian coffee or supping American beers and leaving the cup and saucer tea-drinking to Mum and Dad …the youth were re-inventing themselves and recreating their own identities whilst all the while becoming more and more confident about who they were and where they fitted in. The old dictatorial parenting which had been the norm for 400 years was slowly slipping and the kids had found their voices and were prepared to make their own choices and paint life in much prettier pictures and colours than the drabness of the Demob suit and dreary living-room curtains of a million terraced-houses throughout this soot-blackened national stronghold!
