Yep… I think that might be a bite! There are so many things that bring anglers back to the riverbank time and time again to fish for barbel. For some it’s the peace and quiet of being amongst nature and the calming harmony of running water. For others it’s the mysterious element of the unknown’ of what may be lurking in the depths of the river. Some of us live for the arm-wrenching fight of a powerful barbel as it tries to tie you in knots amongst the willow roots and submerged branches of its watery lair. Or maybe it’s the challenge of a new PB and the settling of the needle on the scales that keep you coming back for more. For me, all of the above have a place in my barbel fishing but there is one thing that stands out more than anything and, believe it or not, it’s the shortest thing that you’ll experience when enjoying a day in pursuit of barbel… the bite. I could wax lyrical about the virtues of the explosive force of a barbel bite but, instead of going all Shakespeare on you, this little video of an 8lb 14oz barbel trying to pull my rod in says it all. I hope you all appreciate how I “deliberately” missed the fish on my first netting attempt just to add a little extra drama!
