Yes, of course, it really feels good when I have an opportunity to sit with a true friend and just let it all out… I mean just “blow off steam”. This sharing time will often involve crying, sobbing, laughing, cussing, calling on Jesus, hollering real loud...and finally just laying still and quiet with an occasional sigh of relief. There is something special about “blowing off steam”…I mean, all these resolutions emerge, such as, “I am not going to take this anymore”, or “She/he has seen/heard the last of me, you can best believe that” or “I know I deserve better than this” or “I am going to work hard over the next few months and do such and such” or "This the last time I will ever be in this situation again...in my life." Too often, however, this “blowing off steam” is the extent of any investment to resolve the issue. While it does serve a purpose and can be the impetus to change, no behavior is as ineffective as only “blowing off steam”. No matter how good it feels at the time, alone it will NEVER result in bringing closure to a negative situation or solve a problem. It is, at best, a short term gratification; a verbal excursion that often leads no where. Sadly, if I am not careful, I will settle for the “moment of pleasure”. “Blowing off steam” alone is not change. Working out the problem is the path that leads to changing any condition or situation. What am I trying to say…. WELL DONE IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN WELL SAID…Amen?
