Yesterday, Channing and I went to visit Dylan. He was awake and lying in bed. I gave him a hug and spelled my name on his board. He addressed me in his usual way by saying I smelled good. Channing held his hand and he asked Whos this little person? I spelled Channings name on the board and he replied HI, CHANNING!!! MAN YOUR GETTING BIG! You could hear his enthusiasm while he spoke to Channing. I had explained to Dylan that he needs to learn brail. Dylan said, brail is HARD! DJ stated he was doing much better with sign language and he could hold a light conversation with his tutor using his learned signs. I replied, maybe I need to learn sign language! Dylan brought up my request for the staff to cut his hair. I said, YUP! He stated, they jacked my hair up! I laughed and squeezed his checks together where his lips made a pucker and aggressively shook his head back and forth to say nooooo, We both laughed! Dylan expressed so much emotion and thoughts to me during our time together. We talked about family, television shows and his illness. One, almost haunting moment, was a story he told me about his fear of blindness before he became ill. Dylan said the Monday before he was taken to the hospital, he and Jackalynn had just left the methadone clinic, he noticed a blind homeless person walking on the sidewalk across from the parking lot. Dylan thought to himself about how terrible it would be, not to have sight. Jackalynn drove and Dylan laid his head back in the passengers seat and closed his eyes to try and imagine what it would be like without sight. Dylan finished his story by saying, And now, I am blind. We both sat quietly for a moment. It seemed as if we were both replaying the scenario in our minds. I wrote on his board. Dont let fear take hold of you! He replied, Im trying. Dylan expressed how he wished that he lived his life more parallel to our brother, Matt. Matt lives fearless and I over think everything! Dylan exclaimed. I gave Dylan some ideas on what he could do for a living without sight. I wanted him to focus on what needs to be done instead of what he feels was lost. My idea was for DJ to keep building his custom tattoo guns. To build the machines requires vision without sight, knowledge, and a dream of what it will become. None of that has been taken from him through this illness.
