Yesterday I flew to Detroit and then caught a connection to - TopicsExpress

Yesterday I flew to Detroit and then caught a connection to Traverse City, MI. Cracked out on no sleep, lonely again and far from home again, again, again, bandless, feeling friendless, feeling caught in the whirlwind that I created. Mind stuff. Im fine, I just get carried away sometimes. So I rent a car, drive into town, have trouble finding where Im supposed to play. Walk all over. Finally I find the stage at a beautiful park by the water. Immediately I bump into this guy Paul. Paul and his wife Kelly danced to Carry for their first dance two years ago. The song, and more of my music, meant a lot to the two of them. About one year ago Kelly was killed in a bicycle accident. Id say Pauls doing better than alright for a guy who has been through what he has been through. One can only imagine. As it turns out, Pauls a pilot and before I know it, Im up in a Cessna thousands of feet above the park, flying a plane right above where Im about to play a gig in an hour. The randomness of the road and the trust between strangers can be astounding. Suddenly I had a friend in town and his name is Paul and he flies planes! And so do I! (For a few minutes anyway). Today Im already further south in Michigan, just played a wonderful little festival called Hoxeyville for smiling faces under grey skies. Sitting in with Geensky Bluegrass tonight. I think they learned one of my songs. My songs. I dont quite know where they come from and I can never fully know where they go. But Im so thankful that you hear them. They drive me around the country and put me on stages and they put me in peoples weddings and put a roof over my head. Yesterday they flew me up in a plane. Thanks, Paul. And thank you, Kelly. And a big collective hug out there to all of you and yours. I love you.
