Yesterday I posted a post about the word shaman as a holy cow the post is just down on page if you want to add to it - please feel free. But Jez Hughes wrote this comment on the thread, and I was moved by it, so I want to repeat it here, so maybe others will read it…… ༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅༅ Jez wrote…….. I absolutely agree about the Holy Cow thing. Ive got no problem calling myself an Astrologer, but I dont descend from Egypt, and Ive done a lot less training and pratice as an astrologer than as a ... dare I say it... shaman. Its the whole PC thing gone crazy. And also by not calling myself a shaman Im secretly feeding the myth that being a shaman is something special - so if someone else does call me it then i must be special! Its a subtle and not very honest ego game in my opinion. As you say, its only a job description, no more important than being a mechanic in many ways. In fact, being a mechanic would a lot more useful in a lot of circumstances . Another point is it carries the projection of the other onto indigenous people or onto shaman, as if they are somehow special beings that are different from us - this is the same energy as calling them savages and madmen I think - it emphasises separation. If we are to humbly accept their teachings, at some point were going to have to integrate this into our own culture. And this means I feel to reclaim a spiritual confidence and to stop fudging as you excellently put it. On a personal level, part of this might mean claiming the word. The only caveat I would have is that you work with the spirits on a regular basis to enable effective healing. The proof is always in the pudding. You have medicine men all across South and North America calling themselves shaman, even though the word is not from their culture. I feel its about coming together and this word is part of the identity of people across the world coming together who have a love for healing and nature. (If that doesnt sound too new agey ). Its time to stop being so PC and afraid and get on with it. (Im talking to myself here mainly). Thanks for initiating this debate.
