Yesterday I wrote about 10 signs you might NOT be ready to adopt a pet. Today, I am going to tell you all about the signs that you ARE ready to adopt a pet! Remember, if you meet even one of the conditions from yesterdays list, you should probably hold off on adopting; on the other hand, you really need to meet ALL the conditions from todays list to be sure that youre definitely ready for a pet. If youre thinking about getting a new pet, give this list a looksee! It might just calm your nerves to know that if you meet all these conditions, theres no need to fret, youre ready for a pet! 1. You are in a stable situation financially. Does this mean you have to be rich? Of course not! Just ask yourself: Can I feed the dog? Can I afford routine medical care? Can I afford a medical bill for an accident to a reasonable extent? Can I pay the adoption fee? If the answer to these questions is “Yes,” then you should be good to go! 2. You are in a stable living situation with your actual residence. Do you have to own your own home? No! Does this mean you cannot move any time soon? No! Does it mean that you should prepare any impending moves such that your animal is allowed to come with you? YES. Does your landlord need to know about and allow your pets? YES. So, if you are prepared to make sure that any and all moves include your pet in your plans and that your current residence definitely allows pets, then you are covered! 3. You are in a stable living situation concerning with whom you live. Does this mean you have to be married? Absolutely not. Does this mean you can’t have small children or plans for small children in the future? Nope! Just ask yourself if every single person in your home is ready for a pet. Make sure that if you live with an in-permanent roommate of any kind that someone in the household is prepared to take full responsibility for the pet if your living situation changes. And make sure that if you have children that they also want a dog. Their opinion is important, too, no matter how young they are! Some small children are afraid of dogs, and if yours is, maybe you should wait a little while to bring on a new pet. But, most children love dogs, and if the dog you pick also loves children (many dogs do), then it is probably a good match! 4. This pet is not a gift, and definitely not a surprise! Does everyone involved know about the pet and approve of the plans to get it? Check! 5. No one living in the home (and preferably no frequent visitors) is allergic to the animal. If there are no health concerns surrounding getting a new pet, then proceed to checkout! 6. You love animals! Now, does this mean that every animal lover should have a pet? Probably not. Does it mean you have to think of animals as highly as animal rescuers do? Not necessarily. But if you do love animals and the comfort they bring, and you don’t want to live without one, you are just their type! 7. You already know about it (or you are willing to learn)! Do you know all about spaying and neutering, ID tags, rabies shots, and housetraining? Yes? Awesome! No? Are you willing to learn? You are?! Great! A pet may be just the thing for someone like you! 8. You are fully prepared for the responsibility of caring for a pet. Are you aware that this animal is going to rely on you for everything, including not only things like food and medical care, but also things like love and companionship? Are you prepared to give it everything it needs? Are you ready for Man’s Best Friend to need you to be his best friend? If so, you’re probably ready to get this party started! 9. You have thought long and hard about the decision to get a pet. Are you sure you really want one? Perfect, perfect! 10. You feel a connection with this particular pet. If you have been looking for a new pet and one of them just “clicks” right away, that is probably a good sign that it was meant to be! If you don’t feel that special connection, you should probably wait until you do. But when it happens, you’ll know it! And when you know, it’s time to say, “Leash it up, boys, I’ll take it!”
