Yesterday morning I woke to blood curdling screams from outside of my window! A woman was screaming, he wont let me go home, call the cops! It sounded like she was about to be murdered. Ive never heard someone in that much distress before. I ran outside to find a 6ft man standing over a woman in the middle of the intersection screaming for help begging to go home and for someone to call the police. Without thinking, at the top of my lunges I yelled, get the f*&k off of her! and kept yelling at him to get his attention off of her. Two older neighbours were standing watching not sure what to do. Every time she tried to run to the neighbours he pushed her back towards his house. She kept falling down. He wasnt going to let her go despite how loudly she screamed or begged. I rang the cops whilst keeping my distance and started to provide a description. He then suddenly started coming towards me... She got up and bolted to the neighbours in that split second. They locked themselves safe behind a tall fence. The operator told me to run inside and lock my door. He left shortly after and the cops came not long after that. What shocked me most about what happened was the fact that even though someone was desperately begging for help and clearly in distress only three people went to her aid. If it wasnt for the neighbours who let her in, I have no idea what I would have done. I also have no idea what his intention was or how the situation came to be or what was going to happen if she was forced back into his home. I dont really care, but Ill be f&*ked if I am going to be the person that sits back and does nothing. I wasnt brought up like that. Put simply, that could have been a family member that needed help in that second and if it was, Id hope to hell that someone would try and help whilst looking after their own safety as much as humanly possible in the process. Im just incredibly grateful that no one was hurt and she got to safety. It could have ended very differently. The two neighbours were over 50 (male and female) and they had the courage to see if there was something that they could do. We all did something without having to get physically involved. Walking out and seeing her screaming on the ground trying to get away is seared into my memory. It was like a scene from a horror movie. Now, let me be clear. I would sooner forget this than share it. My intention is to simply make you think. Next time someone calls for help, please dont ignore it. You dont know what could happen if you did. Stay safe and look after one another. That could be a family member crying out for help next time and you want to sure as hell hope someone goes to help them when they need it the most.
