Yesterday morning a 15-year-old girl - one year younger than my daughter - walked into our local park and killed herself. Apparently she was being bullied. Everyone throws up their hands and says how awful it is (and it is, clearly) but what are we doing to combat the bullying in our Society? What has been happening to that poor child is far, far from in isolation. Parents are allowed to legally hit their children, employers bully their employees, the Coalition picks on anyone who is vulnerable. Our entire Society is operating on a system of brute force, from the fake wars that are created to schools that are failing to tackle the bullying in their midst. I was bullied as a child and when I was old enough I vowed to never allow anyone to do that to me again or, by extension, allow anyone to be bullied with my knowledge. The poor child. Her poor parents. My heart goes out to them. Bullying is an absolute disease in our Society and we should not reserve the sympathy for a point when it is too late to save someone from it. We should be prepared to step in when it is right in front of our faces. Thats how I feel about it anyway.
