Yesterday morning, one of our park biologists happened upon a morning nester! Sometimes, sea turtles come up to nest on the beach near sunrise, and when this happens we usually catch a glimpse of them returning to the ocean and dub them morning nesters. Starting a daily patrol at 5:30 am, the biologist found this glorious loggerhead sea turtle coming up the beach to lay her eggs immediately south of Ramp 1 on Bodie Island. The entire process of coming ashore, crossing the beach, digging the nest, laying the eggs, covering the nest, and returning to sea took two hours to complete.
