Yesterday the deadline passed for responses to the consultation on how to improve community engagement in the Borough of Hounslow. Here is my submission: My idea for community engagement is very simple and its main objective is to help the civic society thrive. As we know, the council owns a huge amount of buildings and offices. According to the latest audit, The Civic Centre itself is only used in around 40% of its capacity which means that vast amount of space, paid for by the taxpayer is unused. These places should be returned back to the community. Why doesnt the council allow community groups to be able to book and use these places for meetings and get-togethers. Of course, there would be a number of restrictions to ensure that the bookings are not abused. Obviously, the purpose of the meeting would have to be clear and open. The meetings would have to be inclusive. Also, a proportion of the users would have to be Hounslow residents.
