Yesterday was the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act. It’s a bit ironic that the Forest Service is poised to issue permits for two large-scale mines (Rock Creek and Montanore) beneath the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness. EIS documents are due out for both later this fall, with approvals likely in early 2015. When the Act was passed, a provision was inserted that allowed miners to stake claims in wilderness for a 20 year period from 1964-1984. Mining interests were at work then as they are today in taking what they can, wherever they can. Effective wilderness protection needs vigilance and a no-compromising position.
