Yesterday we had a special guest at Casa Ratiu: Alexandru Popescu, who is walking from Ploiesti to Bruxelles. Here is his short story: Alexandru Popescu is a Romanian activist who fights for a clean and healthy environment. Last December, he was on hunger strike for 22 days in Bucharest as a protest against the law enforcement’s violence from Pungesti, Vaslui County. How is he protesting? He is going on foot from Ploiesti to Bruxelles. The itinerary will take 3.150 km, via Ploiesti – Brasov – Cluj-Napoca – Oradea – Budapest – Vienna – Berlin – Paris – Bruxelles. He hopes to finish this journey on the 30th November, 2014, so that on the 1st of December, on Romania`s National Day, he would be able to read a message at the European Parliament “This fight is for our next generations and we now have the duty, for their welfare, of protecting the environment. After the earth and water will be poisoned, there will be no point for doing something. It will be too late. My message is very simple: ROMANIANS DO NOT WANT CYANIDE AND SHALE GAS. And because we are part of the European Union, I wish other citizens in E.U. to join me in this protest, showing that EUROPE DOES NOT WANT CYANIDE AND SHALE GAS!” The most important thing we could do is to share his message. We need to inform the media and the citizens about his protest. The second thing we could do is to support him. He needs a warm smile, a glass of water, a warm meal or a bed to lie down for a few hours. Please talk to him, guide him in the right direction or just shake his hand. Dont forget he is doing this protest for you too! Yesterday he had a meeting at our “La Papion” cultural coffee-shop with volunteers, the press and whoever wanted to listen to his story. This morning he left towards Cluj together with Adi Dohotaru, the coordinator of our volunteer center. Next to his badges, on his back-pack we put a bow-tie, a little symbol of democracy.
