Yesterdays Trivia Tuesday car is a 1930 Stutz Model M Lancefield Coupe. With a supercharged SOHC straight eight-cylinder engine, twin plugs per cylinder and a worm gear driven rear axle, this Stutz had a very European flavor compared to most American cars of the time. With very unique coachwork by Lancefield of London, England, that European influence was only enhanced. Harry Stutz built his first car in 1898 and eventually started his own company, Stutz Motor Car Company of America (SMCCA). A Stutz ran in the very first Indy 500 (1911), being complete just the day before the race and still managing to finish 11th in the 500 mile event. Cannonball Baker ran a Stutz Bearcat in the first Cannonball Run in 1915, completing the coast to coast run in 11 days, 7 hours. Harry Stutz left his company in 1920 and new management focused on higher end, luxury cars emphasizing style and strength. Even so, a Stutz finished second in the 1928 running of the LeMans 24 Hours. This 1930 Model M exemplified that strength and style ethos and is one of only two supercharged Stutz produced. The Great Depression saw the closure of SMCCA for good in 1934.
