‘Yet another life saved’ (Green corridor assistance by Chennai Police) With the burgeoning population of vehicles and shrinking road space, Chennai City Police have once again risen to the occassion to make sure that they created a green corridor to save a life. Acting on a request from MMM Hospital in Mogappair on August 8, 2014 traffic police in North Chennai swung into action. The request from the hospital was to ensure the transportation of a human heart harvested from a brain dead patient at Government Stanley Medical College hospital to MMM Hospital in Mogappair. On deciding to regulate the traffic in a bid to save a life and make sure that a human organ was not buried or consigned to flames serving no purpose, B-3, Fort Traffic was assigned to the pilot the ambulance for rushing the heart. Relatives of the ailing patient, as well as the police began the mission with bated breath and increased heart beat. Ambulance carrying the heart piloted by the Inspector commenced the journey racing against time and city traffic and took the “Stanley Hospital-Stanley Roundabout – Broadway Road – Prakasam Salai – NSC Bose Road – Evening Bazaar Road – EVR Salai – Ega Theatre – Anna Arch – Shanthi Colony - 100 Feet Road – Ambattur Estate Road route to reach the MMM Hospital”. Needless to say that the traffic police control room remained on a standby and the entire manpower was deployed on the road to monitor the ambulance on a real time basis to hold the intervening traffic and to clear the held up traffic as the ambulance kept crossing junctions one after the other. “Green Corridor for Life” was ensured and the ambulance with the harvested heart and the ambulance on a mission started from Stanley Medical College Hospital at 01.30 Hrs on 09.08.2014 and reached MMM Hospital by 01.44 Hrs thus covering a distance of 15 km in just 14 minutes thus serving a real and noble purpose. A dedicated team of doctors comprising of Dr. Ejaz Ahmed Sheriff, Dr. Roy Varghese, Dr. Sylvester Samuel, Dr. Kumar, Dr. Uday Charan and Dr.Ulhas Pandurangi successfully performed the transplant. A video of “Green Corridor for Life” provided from Govt. Stanley Medical College Hospital to MMM Hospital, Mogappair is uploaded.
