Yezidî elder: Come back and join the resistance Bedel Khalef Qasim, a Yezidi elder who has joined the Sinjar Resistance Units to fight against the attacks of the ISIS gangs, said only the Kurdish Freedom movement had supported them. He called on all Yezidis, saying: “it is shameful for us to throw ourselves on the mercy of the whole world. I say to the Yezidis that this place is our tomb, our honour and our dignity. Foreign places cannot help us. Come back and join the resistance units.” Bedel Khalef Qasim is from the village of Geliyê Kersê in Sinjar and is the leader of the Mala Zero tribe. Until 3 August when ISIS gangs overran the Sinjar area, he was a commander in the KDP peshmerga forces. After the peshmerga withdrew leaving Sinjar defenceless he left them and, in spite of his advanced age, stayed in the area and joined the resistance units. When the HPG units arrived in the area Bedel Khalef Qasim decided without hesitation to act together with them. Now Qasim is defending the Geliyê Kersê area with a unit of 100 fighters. One of his sons has also joined the Sinjar resistance units. . Khalef Qasim points out that there is a need for a more effective resistance, calling on everyone to defend the territory of Sinjar. He said that while previously he was so strict that he would not have allowed a single PKK member to operate in the area, added: “however, when Çira TV started broadcasting I began to give all my salary to them, as I saw that they were covering and trying to develop our culture and our traditions in their programmes. Now I realise that the Kurdish Freedom Movement is the only movement that is really working for this people and is devoted to them. I will support and assist these brave people, the freedom movement with everything I have, my tribe, family and children. I will join their honourable struggle to save Sinjar.” Qasim called on the people to return and defend Sinjar. He said: “It is shameful for us to abandon Mount Sinjar, and to rely on charity from the outside world. I call on the Yezidis to return. We are the real owners of this land. Foreigners cannot help us. DAISH (ISIS) does not have the power or the belief to break the resistance and will of this people. Come and let us struggle together against these bloodthirsty gangs.” Khalef Qasim called on all Yezidi youth to join the PKK and the Sinjar Resistance Units.
