Yoga and Psychology with Dr. Jude Uy Sun Date: 11/30/2014 From: 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm The popularity of yoga has led to an explosion of research exploring the psychological effects of yoga. For example recent studies have examined whether yoga is effective in reducing stress, or if yoga can help individuals overcome psychological trauma and negative emotions. The science is clear: the psychological benefits of yoga are as significant and abundant as the well-established physical health benefits. In this presentation-workshop, Dr. Jude Uy will discuss how the science of psychology has been impacted by the wisdom of yoga and highlight the aspects of yoga that lead to psychological resilience and healing. While some psychotherapy research will be presented, discussion regarding the shared goals and approaches between yoga and psychology will be included as well as a short mindfulness exercise. Come learn how yoga helps cultivate more positive emotions and improve psychological health from the perspective of a clinical psychologist. Jude Uy, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist who found yoga after hearing a patient of his speak of how well yoga helped relieve stress. Jude took his first yoga class at a local YMCA in 2003 and immediately noticed the incredible sense of well-being it offered. Since then, he has maintained a consistent yoga practice. Currently working at Seton Hall University as a staff psychologist, he provides training, counseling and group therapy to students, and functions as the faculty adviser for the university’s Holistic Health and Yoga student organization. While yoga is known to improve strength, flexibility and balance, as a psychologist, Jude believes in yoga’s ability to foster psychological strength, psychological flexibility and psychological balance. In many ways psychotherapy and yoga share common goals and common approaches and Jude has found that by understanding yogic concepts and engaging in yogic practices one can develop resilience, feel happier and live healthier.
