Laterals build strength and stability in the musculature in the spine rib cage, shoulders and pelvis. Lateral postures alternately stretch and compress the lungs and organs of the torso, such as the kidneys, liver and intestines, thus stimulating their function. These poses also stretch the structures of the pelvis, groin, inner thigh and perineal areas, they increase circulation to the perineal floor and stimulate the function of the reproductive organs. The primary intention of lateral bends is to stretch the torso from the shoulder to the hip joint and laterally flex the spine and the secondary intention is to stretch and strengthen the musculature of the shoulder girdle, hip joints, front of the pelvis and inner thighs.
