You always hear a lot of people say things like “if I was in that situation I would kick the door open, beat up the thug, and carry the damsel in distress away to safety”. You can’t help to look at them them and think “maybe you would, it’s just the ‘could’ part I question”. In an emergency scenario could you pick up a loved one and carry them to safety? (Dead lifts, heavy bag pick up and carry, sandbag run). Could you at least drag them a safe distance? (Sled drag, sled pull) Could you sprint yourself to safety or to get help? (Sprints, cone drills. hill runs) Would you be able to jump or climb over an obstacle? (hurdles, box jumps, tire climb obstacle) Would you be able to pull your body up or just hang on? (chin ups, inverted rows, rope rows, hangs) Could you fight/struggle with someone longer than a couple seconds until help came? (heavy bag, ground ’n’ pound) What about push someone off you? (push ups, push press, medicine ball explosions) Do you have the strength or stamina to do these things to help protect your family or yourself in a life or death situation? Is your emergency plan just hoping that an adrenaline dump will get you through it? Re-think that. Fitness isn’t all about some vain dudes flexing in the mirror. It’s also about giving people the strength, stamina and very importantly the confidence to handle themselves in any situation. If you haven’t challenged yourself or tried pushing your limits are you really confident in your ability to protect loved ones and yourself? To not at least try to keep yourself semi-ready seems a little irresponsible. Everyone wants to buy a gun and hope they get to it in it’s locked box before it’s too late. Good luck. Make yourself the weapon. I always tell my clients I’m making them “bullet-proof”. Like the old saying “I’m 10 feet tall and bullet proof”. Obviously not meaning they can deflect bullets but they are life ready and have confidence. This isn’t just about the emergency situations it’s also about being able to play with your kids, showing them how to live healthy, and to be able to live the longest life we can. Let your great grandkids be the one pushing your wheel chair around, not your kids. We have a responsibility to ourselves and our families to be the healthiest and the best we can be. Make today be the day that you decide to become that. Now get out there and be awesomer you.
