When Cheryl and I moved back to Bassett in 1972 from DC, Cheryls father Finley Gale, who had been the plant superintendent at the WM Bassett factory, arranged an appointment for me to meet Bob Spilman about a job w/ Bassett Furniture Industries. Spilman remarked that he had remembered me working at the cafe- cleaning the floors and wiping the tables when I was a little boy (this was the Main Street Cafe that my aunt Nellie and uncle Curtis Turner owned- my mother Mary was a waitress there). He said hell boy everytime your name was mentioned on TV- Sonny Cassady from Bassett, VA that was like free advertising for Bassett Furniture Industries. You know I went to NC State, dont you boy? I was at the game when you beat us I replied yes sir, I know you went to NC State Bob Spilman then said well hell boy, you married into a good family- Fin Gale is one of our most valued employees.
