“You are like the people who spat on Vietnam veterans.” I don’t know about you, but I like most of the soldiers and veterans I have met. Most of them have been interesting and can teach you so much about war, including the fact that if you have never been to war you can fully understand it. (That said, no one can ever fully understand so complex a subject.) Many have told me they feel they were lied to and indoctrinated into a narrow worldview, and then saw on the ground the horror of what it meant. That is why there are a large number of current and former soldiers on this page. I would like to hear more from you, your stories and your perspectives on them. I don’t spit on anyone, least of all someone who has experienced something traumatic and is trying to break his or her brainwashing. I have a sympathetic ear and even a place to stay. But even those who believe the slogans and believe the military is righteous are not, in the end, to blame for their own beliefs. They have been programmed from the time they could read to understand the world in a certain way. Even if you cannot condone a person’s actions, you can understand their point of view. Let’s not hate on people. The problem is the system they operate under. Expose it and bring it down.
