You can bet that all over the country there are executives - TopicsExpress

You can bet that all over the country there are executives crapping in their pants. Theyre having informal meetings in executive washrooms and trying to reassure themselves and each other by saying things like, That Market Basket thing was an anomaly, a fluke. That could never happen at our company. Then they nod at each other nervously. The sad thing is that theyre right -- partially. In the strictest sense, what happened at Market Basket almost certainly wouldnt happen at their companies. Thats because what happened at Market Basket was driven by complete loyalty to Arthur T. DeMoulas, and there are VERY FEW other executives that engender that kind of loyalty. Certainly the it cant happen here types dont have it from their employees. I can think of precious few CEOs who might command that kind of respect and loyalty. I suspect that if Scott McNealy had been forced out of Sun Microsystems (he resigned because he honestly thought he couldnt do the job as well as somebody else, and he was wrong on that call) that many of us who worked for him would have done something along the lines of what happened at Market Basket. He had our deepest respect and loyalty. Back to the nervous execs, though. The thing that theyre missing -- the thing that means that it CAN happen at their companies -- is that many American workers are loyal to their companies and their customers. Many remember how things used to be and they see how the Market Basket associates, managers, and customers put their collective foot down and said, NO! Not in our company. Not in our store. They see what was accomplished and theyre starting to think... Its time for those executives to buy some extra underwear.
