You may have seen any of the hundreds of articles and sites hyperventilating about GMO grass, so a little sensible analysis may be useful. The GMO grass is turf type Kentucky Bluegrass. Turf type grasses are nothing like forage grasses that ruminants consume. Turf grasses are bred to grow slowly, sometimes not at all, since they are used for lawns and playgrounds. Forage grasses are just the opposite and are bred for growing fast and tall, and persisting under adverse conditions such as cold, drought and defoliation by grazers. Turf grasses are grown in monoculture to look uniform. Forage grasses are grown in polyculture with other varieties of grasses as well as legumes like clovers. A broad spectrum systemic herbicide like roundup would ruin the pasture even if it had some variety of resistant grass, so it is not used. It is possible that a turf type GMO Kentucky Blue would outcross with the bluegrass growing in a pasture somewhere in the eastern states such as Kentucky. This is unlikely around here since it is a poor performing grass that is seldom if ever found in pastures. Get your beef local as well as grass fed and grass finished and you have nothing to worry about. cultureofawareness/2014/09/19/christina-sarich-kiss-your-grass-fed-beef-goodbye-gmo-grass-about-to-be-approved/
