You often here of many skateboard legends. Most of them are early west coast guys who did help mold skateboarding into what it is today. .. unfortunately you dont hear of many east coast guys because in the 80s there was no internet, minimal high profile contest, and no magazines on the east coast. There were many guys who were ahead of their time... u just never heard of them. Over the years of teaching skateboarding at summer camps and clinics, I would often tell stories to the kids about guys I skated with who impressed me and motivated me. One was Bernie ODowd ... aka backwards Bernie. Bernie (in my mind) invented skating switch or backwards... as we would of called it. He was the first i saw to drop in on his nose do airs and inverts riding backwards. If he wasnt first... Im sure he was the best. It was completely rad to see a guy doing his own thing and traveling his own path... Bernie was a fireside story to many children over many summers.... mad respect!! I was stoked to randomly find Bernie on Facebook a few years back.... This goes out to Backwards Bernie and all those who do their own thing.....
