You see, the thing about successful doomsday cults is that they put the Day of Judgment way, way, way off into the future so they can shake down the easily frightened and the scientifically and psychologically illiterate now. This is how we distinguish between offering plates and plate tectonics: only one of them wants to take your money. Take that report out of Antarctica that the ice sheets are melting. That was smart PR. Everybody forgets that New York City sat under a mile of ice just a few years ago. Society can hardly remember what happened five minutes ago. Maybe the ice is a fluke and Antarctica is returning to its natural state--if such a chimera can be imagined. Nobody knows what Gaia wants anyway. Not even Gaia. So like a middle-aged woman. She has gone through so many temperature variations and atmospheric fluctuations over the last 4.6 billion years that nobody can say with certainty what is normal. Not even her. Only these guys think they know. Uh-huh. The experts. Faith-healers, more like. Their Day of Judgment does not occur for 500 years, sort of tomorrow in terms of geologic time, true. But nobody living now will be around to see if they are right or not and hold them accountable. They will die righteous and rot and return as oil like politicians. Everyone will die except Gaia. She is a survivor. And she already has supervolcanoes and solar flares and asteroids to worry about. And she is really worried about those. I mean, look at what happened to her beloved babies the trilobites and dinosaurs. She was powerless to save them. Those creatures who cannot move quickly and adapt to changing conditions die. It was ever thus.
