Young Professionals: 5:01pm Lesson. For you young married Professionals....go home. If what you have to after 5pm is to compensate for what you didnt do between 8am-5pm or its a condition of advancement in your company (having drinks with co-workers, attending afterhour events aka meat markets, etc) then you and your employer are doing each other a grave disservice. Youre not giving them an honest days work where your work product is more than sufficient for advancement and theyre indirectly complicit in the destruction of your marriage. Extreme you think? No. A necessary generalization, you bet. Putting your family first means putting yourself first and it may be necessary to say no to someone else at 5:01 ( a boss, a client, a co worker) in order to say yes to yourself and family. Ive seen more 5:01s derail more careers, relationships, and marriages than Id ever reveal (to protect the names of the guilty and theyre not going to admit it) but I can assure you it is a dangerous trap. I can think of no more relationship to develop than the one at your home address and its easy to get lost when youre chasing those business careers. Putting yourself into social situations at 5:01 time and time again is an unnecessary test. And too many young pros fail it. And for those of you that will insist its that doing what I have to do (yuck) then invite your spouse to meet you there. Let your spouse meet these people you work with creating a safety net for all involved. Listen making this small gesture in your work schedule where you put yourself & spouse first every day will pay off in spades for you personally and professionally. Because heres the drumroll part... your superiors arent going to advance someone whos personal life is unraveling in front of them since no employer wants your drama associated with them. Seen it a lot....been there.....go home & selfishly remember that 100% of what you earn for your family is better than the 50% youll end up with. Alone.
