Younger husbands and wives: I agree with Ryan Pemberton when he wrote, “One of the hardest lessons about marriage is that we cannot save our spouse from all hurts and challenges.” This is especially true for guys. We think, “I’m going to marry her and take care of her,” so whenever she faces hurt of any kind, we feel like we have failed. Here’s the thing: the job of Savior and ultimate protector is already taken. We can’t be that to our spouse. We just can’t. We can be WITH them in their suffering, but we can’t always lead them OUT of their suffering. And sometimes, hurting with them is much harder to do than trying to free them from their pain. But that’s marriage, at the bedrock level: hurting when your spouse hurts. Singles, you need to know that agreeing to marry someone means agreeing to hurt whenever they hurt. And in some lives, that can be a lot.
