Your Weight-Loss Solution: Food Questions for Your Server YOUR DAILY DIET TIP By James Beckerman, M.D. Published December 09, 2014 BE FIRST TO COMMENT People are sometimes intimidated when ordering in restaurants. After the server tries to sell you the daily special, you’re on the spot. It’s not uncommon to make a last-minute decision while a family member is ordering. And then there’s the ultimate display of uncertainty: “What’s your favorite thing on the menu?” But when you’re trying to lose weight, you shouldn’t care what the server likes to eat – there are better questions you could be asking. Here are three food questions for your server that will help you cut calories and improve nutrition: How is the food prepared? The menu can be deceiving. Terms like “crispy,” “battered” and “poached in oil” are all more appetizing ways of saying that something is fried. Make sure you understand how your food is being prepared. Ask what kind of oil is being used (olive oil is a lot healthier than goose fat). This gives you an opportunity to ask for alternatives, like baking or broiling, that will significantly reduce the fat and calories. What are the ingredients? Sometimes the menu doesn’t contain the amount of detail you need. Ingredients like butter, eggs and bacon, and additives like MSG can enhance food texture and taste, but they can also add unwanted calories and fat and contribute to weight gain. They can be introduced into foods like stews, casseroles and beans without being obvious. Ask if the chef can make the dish without them. May I make a special request? Nobody likes to give the server a hard time. But it’s your money and, ultimately, your health. This is the time to ask for steamed vegetables instead of fries, salad dressing on the side and no mayonnaise.
