Youth Empowerment Summit “Bridging the Development Gap: Youth Empowerment in a Globalized World” Thursday August 22, 2013 @ 9:00AM, Local Government Guest House. Summit Overview The organizers of the YES Initiativeinvites the public to the 1stAnnual Youth Empowerment Summittaking place on Thursday August 22nd, at the new auditorium of Yakurr Local Government Guest House, Ugep, Cross River State. The Summit seeks to inspire, empower, educate and mobilize young people to participate in today’s global economy. Thus it is an opportunity for students, unemployed graduates and community members to come together and participate in panel discussions where academics, professionals, activists and community leaders will speak about globalization and youth empowerment. The Topic of the summit, ‘Bridging the Development Gap: Youth Empowerment in a Globalized World’ attempts to get underneath the rhetoric of globalization as an enabling force and explore the link between globalization and youth empowerment. From the rise of information globalization to the flow of economic opportunities to transnational activismto the fight against poverty, a variety of issues will be brought to light by a variety of brilliant speakers.An important focus of the summit will be the discussion of the political, economic and cultural forms of empowerment necessary to overcome the challenges posed by globalization, what opportunities are available, and what responsibilities to act have young people. The objective is to create an inclusive space to foster discussion, education, networking and action beyond the summit itself. The keynote speaker will be Prof. Oka Obono of the University of Ibadan, who has written on the subject of cultural globalization and has recently completed a study on internal forms of accountability in Nigeria. His presentation will establish the intellectual connection between globalization and youth empowerment. Following this will be panel discussions, featuring Mr Ubong King, industrialist and motivational speaker, Mr Francis Ekom, Assistant Marketing Manager at TINAPA and business scholar at the University of Calabar, Honourable John Gaul Lebo, representing Abi constituency at the State House of Assembly, Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, Lawyer and human rights activist, Dr Raphael Oko, International Coordinator at Global Educators for All Initiative, representative from the First Bank of Nigeria Plc, Shan George, Award winning celebrity, speaker, movie producer and Nollywood Ambassador, Dr Igile Igile, scholar/consultant, and a team of Business Development trainers from an American corporation. Other presenters include Etim Omini, Country Director at OneSky, Calabar, Wofai Ewa, Project Manager at Sahara Group and engineering scholar at the Cross River University of Technology, Hope Obeten, development practitioner, Otu Arikpo, staff at the Federal Inland Revenue Service and Obasesam Okoi, international development analyst. Registration will include a program and information package. Lunch will be provided.
