Youths Stone Bukola Saraki At Empowerment Programme, Aide Critically Injured These are certainly not the best of times for former Governor of Kwara State and Senator representing Kwara Central Senatorial District in the country’s upper legislative chamber, Senator Bukola Saraki as youths in the state seem determined to scuttle his ambition of attaining political leadership of the state. Last weekend to placate the youths, Saraki organised an empowerment programme at Ajikobi Ward in Ilorin. The programme took place at Pakata roundabout where the Senator intended to dsitribute cash and other empowerment items to youths and women in the area. But Saraki got more than what he bargained for as the angry youths descended on the scene of the proramme throwing stones and cudgels at the dignatories at the event thereby disrupting the event. Thegazellenews learnt that it took the brave intervention of one of the Senator’s closest aides to prevent his being seriously injured as one of the youths threw a chair at him. The said aide jumped infront of Saraki and prevent the chair from hitting him while he took the full force of the chair on his face. The aide is currently lying critically injured in a private hospital in Ilorin. There are varying tales surrounding the cause of the attack. One school of thought alleged that the attackers were a faction of thugs Saraki and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) used to rig the last general election. It was alleged that the former Kwara Governor distributed over N15 million among a faction of the thugs last year when they started complaining of abandonment thereby committing violent crimes in the state. “Those who did not benefit from the largesse are not the one troubling Saraki now,” sources told thegazellenews. Another school of thought stated that the attackers were youths from Ajikobi Ward protesting against the role allegedly played by Bukola in the alleged removal of Professor Abdur Raheem Oba as the Chairman of the Federal Character Commission. Both Professor Oba and Senator Saraki are from Ajikobi Ward. The youths were not happy that Professor Oba whose tenure as Chairman of the Federal Character Commission witnessed mass employment of youths in the state, has been removed as the chairman of the commission with the Federal Government’s resolve to dissolve the commission. Ajikobi Ward is located in Ilorin West Local Government Area of the state. To compound a bad weekend for the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Ecology, youths of Upper Old Yidi Road rejected packs of food which the Senator had sent to them to break the day’s fast. The youths were reported to have thrown the food items at the senator’s workers who distributed them. Saraki is indeed having a nightmarish time with youths in the state. Last week at an empowerment programme organised by former Chairman of Ayedun Local Government, Akeem Ayedun now a member of the House of Representatives at Omu Aran, some youths allegedly stormed the programme venue, shot into the air and cart away the empowerment items.
