You’re down wind of the memories now ........ DOWN HOME There’s an old tire swing in the tree , if you close your eyes You can still see it swinging A Sunday morning under linen sheets , you’re so many years away from town If you close your eyes though , you can still hear The church bells in the distance , they’re ringing It’s not always a road that takes us down home Sometimes , it’s a memory The streets of your town , you walked so many times In your mind , you’re still there As you were when you were young There were words that you once said , that now roll around in your head And hang like an autumn leaf , ready to fall from the tip of your tongue Sometimes it’s nothing more than an old song you haven’t heard in so long that can take you , wrap your heart in a memory a place in time , you will forever own that will be there , when you need it’s not always the old road that runs by the river or a sunrise , that delivers us from one day to another sometimes it’s only a feeling in our bones that takes us down home Your inner child still wears a smile Never wondering why , all the days had to come and go Or where they went Somewhere along the way , down home became Nothing more than a beautiful Closely guarded sentiment You close your eyes , feel the summer wind blowing through your hair You close your eyes Kisses under the bridge by the trestles as the sun dropped behind the ridge you’re still there Down home , where you grew as a child Down home , where your face always knew a smile Everything lines up Takes it rightful place in time and in your soul You made up your mind to leave so long ago You’re down wind of the memories now take them all in Close your eyes and go back Down home You close your eyes , running through the grass So high The clickety clack of the train As it rolls on by Your mind keeps these memories intact Even if you can never go back again Down home is a long road that leads to the back Of your mind A road that will never end © Glenn Bowie 2011
