ZAMBIA AT 50- IS THERE ANYTHING TO BE HAPPY ABOUT?? Edmond Lifwekelo on Zambias Golden Jubilee Is there really anything to celebrate zambia turning 50 yrs? What have we achieved as a nation the last 50 yrs? Is the quality of life now better than it was 50 yrs ago? Have we achieved what we fought for as a nation 50 yrs ago? These are the questions we need to ask ourselves as we commemorate zambias 50 years of independence today. I totally agree with President HHs stance. There is really nothing to celebrate about zambias independence. Why did we want self rule from the Britons? We wanted self rule because we wanted things to change for the better. We wanted an egg for breakfast every morning, we wanted quality education for our children, we wanted quality health care for our selves, we wanted better Jobs, we wanted cheaper food and above all,,, we wanted freedom. We wanted a bill rights which was going guarantee freedom of movements, freedom of expression, rights to decent accomodation etc. Have we achieved this 50 yrs after self rule? NO! To say the truth, Zambia is now worse off than it was 50 years ago....and it is shameful that we are still talking about the constitution 50 years after independence. And the PF has made it worse. There is no doubt that the quality of life now is worse than before independence. At independence everyone could afford 3 meals in a day; Jobs were available, you just have to choose which job suit your qualifications. Are we having the freedom we fought for? NO. PF has taken us back to pre-independence era; how many Journalists have been beaten and arrested for writing the truth? How many political leaders have been arrested for critisizing the way PF is mis-managing the affairs of the nation? How many priests have been deported for speaking out against the social injustices which citizens are going through? Lets be honest with each other. Our leaders have failed us. There is nothing to celebrate about. How can you celebrate when you have literally no food at home? How can you celebrate when you have been told that you salary has been frozen for 2 yrs when the cost of living is shooting up everyday? How can you celebrate when your child who got 6 points at Grade 12 has been denied a bursary by the Government? How can you celebrate when you have a Government which says its not their responsibilty to educate citizens? How can you celebrate when you have a Govemnt which is dragging you into heavy debt thru the sham road projects? Today should be a day of deep reflection from every well meaning zambian about where we are coming from and where we are going... and not meaningless celebrations- parties to celebrate zambias failures? I r est my case. EL
