Zubin Mehta – perhaps the greatest orchestra conductor of our times and the best in “post romantic music”. Just finished reading his autobiography “The score of my life” to coincide with his maiden performance in Kashmir. Truly one of India’s greatest to have made his mark on planet earth purely on his talent and a proud indian to have maintained his Indian passport to this day - 58 years after leaving India. He is right on top of the greatest Indians to have made a mark globally in the august company of Amartya Sen, Vishwanathan Anand et al. Humble as always he credits his initial success to the opportunities to him by replacing the more renowned conductors who had to pull out for some reason – takes away nothing from his exemplary achievements in the field of music as the most renowned conductor of our generation purely on excellence. As a Parsi (Zorashtrian) he did point out that there are no more than 80,000 Parsis in the world today but look at how much they have contributed (and punched above their weight) to make the world a better place – Ratan Tata and clan, Pallonji & Cyrus Mistry, Godrejes, Homi Jehangir Bhabha, Yusuf Hameid, Nusli Wadia are just some of the names that pops up right away. May you live long and keep bringing glories Zubin.
