When the carnage from two major contender-claiming incidents was over, it was Aric Almirola who not only survived but claimed his first career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory and took the giant step toward punching his ticket into the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. Running the iconic No. 43 with the U.S. Air Force on the hood for July 4 weekend, Almirolas win came on the 30th anniversary of team owner Richard Pettys 200th Cup victory. Im more concerned with getting my first win than what happened 30 years ago, admitted Almirola during the races third red-flag delay for a thunderstorm that eventually halted the race with 48 scheduled laps remaining. Not that Almirola, who edged Brian Vickers and Kurt Busch for the win, had no sense of history or what his triumph might mean to Richard Petty Motorsports. Man, I just took the 43 car to victory at Daytona, said Almirola, standing under an umbrella in Victory Lane. This is amazing. I grew up two hours away from here in Tampa and grew up in those stands, watching Daytona 500s and Firecracker 400s -- and grew up dreaming about what it would be like to win here. Richard Petty wasnt at Daytona on Sunday but reveled in the victory via phone. Today is the future, Petty said. To be able to win a race down there, win it for the Air Force on the Fourth of July, the whole thing is great. Weve had so many disappointments -- and it rained on us today. But it rained on us at the right time. You know, I dont ever give up on anything. Looking back on the history of Petty Enterprises -- the turmoil weve been through the last seven or eight years ... Ive always said is that if I keep working on it long enough, youre going to overcome all of these things. One win doesnt get you over the hump but it makes it easier to go on from here. With the No. 43s first victory at Daytona since 1984 and first Cup win at any track since John Andrettis victory at Martinsville Speedway in 1999, Almirola can now dream about what it will be like to pilot the No. 43 in the Chase. Yes, and deservedly so for this race team, he said. Now were going to be a part of that, to have the opportunity, not only to take (our sponsors) to Victory Lane, but to have that added exposure of the Chase. It is really cool to give back to those people who took a chance on me and took a chance on our race team. The victory was the third consecutively for Ford, which last won three in a row in 2005 with victories by Greg Biffle (2) and Carl Edwards. Biffle, who led the race briefly but finished 29th, predicted chaos when he watched drivers such as David Gilliland, Landon Cassill and Reed Sorenson, not among the points leaders, battling at the front of the field early on. Biffle called it some of the craziest racing hed ever seen. But he never saw the massive incident on Lap 98 brewing. The beginning of (the race) was crazy when the 40 and 36 and 38 were dicing for the lead, he said. Then it calmed down and we had a green-flag pit cycle. (The 26-car crash) was just a chain reaction. This wasnt (about craziness) at all. This was pretty calm. Sundays first big-time wreck occurred on Lap 20, just before NASCARs scheduled competition caution. Sixteen cars were involved, including the top six drivers in the point standings. Near the front of the field, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. got a bit loose. Jeff Gordon, looking to avoid him, tapped Tony Stewart and the chaos was on. Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick, Edwards, Kyle Larson and AJ Allmendinger joined Stenhouse and Stewart in the garage with substantial damage. A half-lap from getting a competition caution and Stenhouse is going to be a hero, said Stewart, among the perennial contenders to note of some wild racing at the front of the pack. I guess Ricky thought it paid something to get to Lap 20. I dont know what happened to him, but he took out a bunch of good cars right there. Stenhouse deflected the criticism. It just got loose, Stenhouse said. We had a full head of steam. The 24 (Gordon) was pushing me pretty good there and the 33 (Bobby Labonte) pulled out ahead of us and blocked. I checked up a little and all of a sudden we got hit in the left rear. The second incident also began near the front of the pack when Biffle got into the back of the weekends NASCAR Nationwide Series race winner Kasey Kahne. That contact sent Kahne and Joey Logano spinning in action that collected a total of 26 cars. The chaos left Almirola on the lead with Kurt Busch and Vickers in pursuit. It also left Kyle Busch upside down in his Joe Gibbs Toyota. I knew it was going to be big as far up (in the field) as I was, Kahne said. I was getting hit from behind and I just started spinning. Its kind of scary. I think my car got airborne. I have never had that happen before and its a helpless feeling when youre getting hit as you are in the air. I was more concerned when I got out and saw Kyle on his roof. I wasnt sure why he wasnt getting out with his car being upside down on the track. Kyle Busch was able to manage a bit of levity even after his car was plowed into by Cole Whitt, toppling it onto its roof. Just hanging out, Busch radioed, indicating he was OK. It felt like a slow carnival ride. I guess thats fitting for 4th of July weekend but not here in Daytona. I just got T-boned there at the end and it just kind of toppled me over. Note: Kurt Buschs No. 41 car will undergo a tech investigation at the NASCAR R&D Center in Concord, North Carolina, after a split track bar was discovered. // NASCAR News Wire Kasey Kahne Wins Daytona Nationwide Series Race CIA Stock Photos Kahne (5) Wins In Photo Finish Kasey Kahne and Ryan Sieg were non-factors for much of Friday night’s Subway Firecracker 250 at Daytona International Speedway. Kahne, sitting 12th for a restart with three laps remaining, hadn’t won a NASCAR Nationwide Series race since August 2007. Sieg, a rookie running 14th, had never finished better than ninth in 19 previous Nationwide starts. But when it came to the final push, there they were – Kahne charging from eighth during a green-white-checkered finish and Sieg nudging him past Regan Smith for the victory. Ryan Sieg was pushing me hard, letting off and bumping and that was the reason we were able to win, Kahne said. Sieg hit me from behind and hit me hard. I just kept getting more momentum coming to the line. The victory by just 0.021 seconds (third closest in the series at Daytona) was the second Nationwide triumph in a row for JR Motorsports and owner Dale Earnhardt Jr., who won at Kentucky Speedway last week with Kevin Harvick driving the No. 5 Chevrolet. Earnhardt couldn’t lose in the photo finish. He also owns the car of Smith, who was denied a 2014 Nationwide Series sweep at Daytona. It’s been a while since I’ve been in any victory lane. It felt great, said Kahne, who said he felt kind of trapped in mid-pack for much of the race. We just kind of sat there through most of the race. I was kind of at the wrong place at the wrong time. Then, the last half-lap I had tons of momentum. The cars in front of me moved in the right direction. Ryan Sieg was pushing and letting off and bumping and hitting me good and hard. That was kind of the whole reason we were able to win. On the final restart, Smith, who led a race-high 47 laps, had his hands full fending off Kyle Larson, who was being pushed by Ryan Reed. Meanwhile, Smith was getting help on his rear bumper from Joey Logano, who battled back from an early-race speeding penalty and finished sixth. I didn’t even know the 5 (Kahne) had a run until we were past the start-finish line, said Smith, who has excelled at restrictor plate tracks this season with his victory at Daytona and third-place finish at Talladega. I knew he had so much momentum when he went past me, I kind of figured he nipped me. I had enough time to look at the (scoring) pylon real quick and it had already adjusted, so I knew, right there. It’s amazing at the end of these races, Smith added. We hit each other all race long and every time somebody touches you in the middle of the corner it’s ‘Oh, man, don’t do that.’ It feels like the car is dancing around. Then we get out there at the end and we just blast the back bumpers off each other and somehow make it back to the stripe. Sieg, driving the Pull-A-Part Used Auto Parts Chevrolet for RSS Racing, not only earned his best career finish (third) but praise from both Kahne and Earnhardt, who said he noticed how hard he raced earlier in the season at Dover despite less-than-top equipment. It was crazy, Sieg said of the finish. Kasey got clear and I just pushed him a little harder at the end. He wasn’t squirrely or nothing, so I kept going. (Sieg) does a great job, Kahne said. It’s tough to run with the JR team and Gibbs and Penske and Roush and Turner Motorsports. He does a good job with what they have, and if he keeps it up, he’ll get more opportunities. What had been a nearly-clean race turned chaotic with two crashes in the final seven laps, the second of which involved Elliott Sadler as he tried to rally from 11th place. Like Sadler, contenders Kyle Busch and Chase Elliott also required pit stops before the final restart. Smith regained the Nationwide Series points lead, taking a 12-point advantage on Sadler, who led 28 of the first 35 laps but was forced to return to the pits after the first round of pit stops left him with a wheel vibration. Sadler dropped all the way to 27th, a lap down, and finished 21st after his incident on the restart with three laps remaining. The finishing order was also significant because the top four finishers among full-time Nationwide Series drivers (Smith, Sieg, Reed, who finished fourth, and Jeremy Clements, who rallied for eighth), qualified for the Nationwide Insurance Dash 4 Cash program which will pay at least $100,000 to top performers in each of the next four races. Kyle Busch, no worse than fourth in any of his previous 12 Nationwide starts this season, seemed poised for another strong finish. He led seven laps but settled for 17th after his late pit stop. Joe Gibbs Racing was dominant early with Sadler, Busch and Darrell Wallace Jr. (seventh) running 1-2-3 in front of Trevor Bayne and pole sitter Dakoda Armstrong for much of the early going. Armstrong earned the pole in rain-shortened qualifying and was in contention for much of the race before falling to 19th. Jeffrey Earnhardt, driving despite a broken collarbone, gave way to relief driver Matt DiBenedetto on the way to a 33rd place showing.// NASCAR News Wire ___________________________________________________________ Courtesy of Jayski jayski • NASCAR Explains Why Race Was Called: The day was only half over but the race was finished. NASCARs decision to call Sundays Coke Zero 400 at about 3:00pm/et left some competitors and fans perplexed. The decision ended NASCARs weekend battle with showers, which caused a multi-car crash during Nationwide qualifying on Friday and forced Saturday nights Cup race to be moved to Sunday. Rain twice delayed Sundays race before it was called after 112 of 160 laps. Aric Almirola was declared the winner. With a forecast from the National Weather Service calling for the likelihood of rain until about 8:00pm/et and the race past halfway - a day after it was scheduled to run - it tipped the scales for NASCAR to call the race. Weve seen this weather pattern and felt it was the best interest of fans getting done and getting home, said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president of competition. We put on 2 1/2 hours of solid racing. When you looked at what was in front of us weather-wise, we felt it was best for all concerned that the race was completed. Pemberton said an issue was that was so much rain in Turn 3 that water was trapped behind the SAFER barrier and coming down on the track. That could have delayed a restart if the rest of the track was dry. The later the rain persisted, the longer it would have been to dry the track because it would not have been aided by the sun.(Motor Racing Network)(7-7-2014) • Career best finishes for drivers at Daytona Four drivers scored a career-best finish in the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway on Sunday: #43-Aric Almirolas win bested his 3rd place finish at Bristol in April; #3-Austin Dillon finished 5th. NASCAR executive Robin Pemberton said rules could be tweaked to prevent teams from trying to scheme ways to post the fastest laps during the three knockout stages. I think well learn from all of this moving forward and continue to talk and see if theres anything that we need to look at to try to make things better for the fans and better for the competitors, said Pemberton, NASCARs vice president of competition. All in all, its been a great year for qualifying and its been a great year for a lot of different rule changes that we put into play this year. Well sit down and well talk about some of these things toward the latter stages of the year and see what we may rub on and do a little changing or some things like that. NASCARs new qualifying rules package was used for the first time at Daytona in the Sprint Cup Series on Friday, and it produced some head-scratching moments as groups of cars slowed to a crawl around the 2 1/2-mile superspeedway. The small packs - most of them formed by teammates - were hoping to pull behind bigger groups and draft behind them to produce fast laps. But no one was eager to lead the way, especially not in a huge cluster of cars. NASCAR could conceivably change the qualifying rules before the Oct. 19 race at Talladega.(Associated Press)(7-6-2014) • Young Wisconsin Mechanics Spend Race Week with Wood Brothers: Two recent high school graduates from Wisconsin - winners of last months AAA Student Auto Skills National Finals at Ford World Headquarters in Dearborn, Mich. - spent the week of the Coke Zero 400 with Wood Brothers Racing getting an up-close look at how race teams prepare for and manage a Sprint Cup race. This unique job shadowing experience was part of the Wisconsin teams prize package for winning the 65th annual technology showdown with teams from each of the 50 states. The contest included a written test and a hands-on element diagnosing and repairing bugs planted on their competition vehicle. Justin Bublitz, 18, and Colt Morris, 17, of Grafton High School in Grafton, Wisc., along with their instructor, Carl Hader, toured the Wood Brothers Racing shop in Harrisburg, N.C., the Roush Fenway Racing shop in Concord, N.C., visited the NASCAR Hall of Fame in downtown Charlotte and are spending race weekend with the Wood Brothers at Daytona International Speedway. Were excited to be part of the AAA Student Auto Skills program, said Eddie Wood, co-owner of Wood Brothers Racing and the #21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion. Its been fun having Justin, Colt and their teacher, Carl, with us this week. We think its important to reward achievement in young people and maybe interest them in a career in racing in the process. Morris, who along with Bublitz won the competition in Dearborn with a perfect score in the hands-on part of the competition, said, The week has been amazing. To be close to everything and watch the magic happen is a great experience. Bublitz said, This is insanely fun. Its mind-blowing the things were seeing. Its so different from working on a normal car. This definitely makes me want to get into racing. Before this I was never a NASCAR fan, but now Ill probably be a huge NASCAR fan. Instructor Hader, a teacher for 35 years, has taken 15 teams to the AAA Auto Skills National Finals and has two wins. He views the race week experience from a much larger perspective. I expect the kids to take back to their everyday lives the idea that you should be organized, plan things out ahead of time and that nothing happens by chance, Hader said. These race teams do everything they can think of before the race to put their drivers in a position to win.(Wood Brothers Racing)(7-6-2014) • B.R.M. named Official Timekeeper of Pocono Raceway: Pocono Raceway announced a multi-year partnership with Bernard Richards Manufacture (BRM), an iconic, international watchmaker. France began the news conference with a review of the new Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup format that features a virtual win and youre in formula for making NASCARs postseason. Beginning his second decade at the helm of the sport, France also addressed the evolving rules package, noting he attended an hour-long session earlier in the day with NASCAR Vice President of Innovation Gene Stefanyshyn. He discussed how the competition group at NASCAR is basing decisions on science and technology. France referred to a new engine package that has been discussed this year and noted that those efforts are part of NASCARs plan to lower the barrier of entry into the sport for owners and manufacturers. Other hot topics addressed included a recent report about new ways to deliver souvenirs to fans at tracks. France said, We do think theres probably some newer, better ways to merchandise for fans. When asked whether Iowa Speedway would get a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race, he said, We dont have plans for a Cup date there. With Nationwide moving from series sponsorship to sponsoring Dale Earnhardt Jr.s Sprint Cup car next season, France addressed finding a new partner. ...on the Nationwide sponsorship, very good interest, France said. I think in the coming weeks well be getting to the end of that process, and we will be in very good shape when the dust settles there. On whether the final race of the season might move Ford Championship Weekend from Homestead-Miami Speedway, France said: When you talk to the Ford people and you talk to people at ISC, at Homestead, they want to do whatever makes sense for that sponsorship. But he continued, Homestead is ... by any definition, the best mile-and-a-half track that the drivers believe that they have -- that they can really race hard and compete hard, and that matters, too, right. Its a very important thing. When you factor all those things in, were going to be in Homestead for the foreseeable future. On changes to the overall 2015 schedule, France talked about weather issues at Bristol Motor Speedway over the last few years and said, Well be releasing that in September, but its fair to say that theres a robust discussion within the stakeholders to come up with the best schedule that we can for 2015 and beyond. The new policy generated controversy right from the start of the season when NASCAR penalized a race-contending James Buescher at Daytona in February for what appeared to be a judgment call at best. It seems like the Sanctioning Body has created a rule that is near impossible to officiate with consistency, a fact that was made totally clear on Friday night. #40-Josh Wise and #01-Landon Cassill were issued pass-through penalties early in the race while other pairings including Kyle Busch/Elliott Sadler and Trevor Bayne/Kyle Busch were left untouched despite similar actions. Even the finish of Fridays race came down to a push with #39-Ryan Sieg shoving #5-Kasey Kahne all the way down Turn 4, across the frontstretch and past #7-Regan Smith for the win. NASCAR Vice President of Competition Robin Pemberton met with the media on Friday night, explaining that cars moving side-to-side while bump drafting indicated no linkage, which explained the decision not to penalize either Kahne or Sieg. But Pemberton is aware of the derision that some of the calls and no calls from race control has generated this season and assured everyone that NASCAR will continue to address and analyze its rules package for everyone involved. Well look at this situation, Pemberton said. Its the last plate race for the Nationwide Series this season and these are the rules we put in place at the beginning of the year. Weve worked with the teams under their suggestions and said that we would look at it by the end of the year and see what adjustments we need to make.(Popular Speed)(7-5-2014) ___________________________________________________________ Courtesy of PitTalks Tire changer for SHR sleeps in van overnight instead of flying home with team pittalks/2014/07/06/tire-changer-for-shr-sleeps-in-van-overnight-instead-of-flying-home-with-team/ ___________________________________________________________ C A M P I N G * W O R L D * T R U C K * S E R I E S ___________________________________________________________ Courtesy of Jayski jayski NEXT RACE: American Ethanol 200, Friday July 11, 2014 at Iowa Speedway ___________________________________________________________ N A S C A R * C A N A D I A N * T I R E * S E R I E S localracing.nascar/news/6 ___________________________________________________________ Ranger Right At Home In ICAR Victory Lane Collects Third Straight Win On Quebec Road Course MIRABEL, Que.
