a message from Gargi Sen (something that haunts many of us in many many many different ways) Dear friends, dear filmmakers from South Asia: Today, 22 August is when submissions to Doc Wok will close. At 00:00 hrs Indian Standard Time. Please do appreciate I can neither extend deadline nor accept anything submitted after this time. My dearest doc fraternity, I hope u understand that my phone is switched off for personal reasons. For very personal reasons only. I am unable to respond to questions and queries. However, allow me to restate the objectives of DocWok as my partner, Claas Danielsen, and I designed. 1. DocWok aims to support the documentary practice in South Asia by bringing together, on the same site - both time and space - on-going cinema project and mentoring and guidance on dramaturgy, narrative development, content, aesthetics and politics. 2. DocWok aims to connect projects and expertise from around the world, with each other, so that independent (I mean independent of market and state), so that independent filmmakers can begin to forge gossamer thin connections cast in stone across and beyond boundaries imposed by nation-states. So that filmmakers can forge links. Directly. Independent of Claas and I. 3. In the process DocWok also aims to understand, what EXACTLY is South Asia? For me the last is a deeply personal quest. My family is from that land which was called by different names at different time. I live in a city that too has seen similar metamorphosis. Funnily my roots lie in a small colony that too has been called by all kinds of names. But you see, today I am advised to go yet another country - by a loony fringe (some call them trolls) - to yet another land. What confuses me is that the names - of the three spaces - where I come from, where I live, and where I am advised to go - have a common noun: Pakistan. My fathers family left as refugees from East Pakistan (nowadays known as Bangladesh), I live in East Pakistan Displaced Persons Colony (nowadays known as Chittaranjan Park) and a section of the citizens of the Democratic Republic of India would prefer to see me in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Now, I am seriously confused. Tell me how I can be sent to Pakistan when I live in Pakistan? And you see, I get even more confused when you send me links to travel agencies where I can buy tickets to Pakistan. Now isnt that love slightly misplaced? Isnt it better to take up these travel related confusions with the current government? I mean whoever is at present in governance in the democratic republic of India? I am just a very, very small fry. And guys, I would LOVE it f you could seriously send me a ticket to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan as I have never, ever had the good fortune of travelling to that land I can only see as holy. Why holy? That is a discussion for another day and another forum. And BTW, guys, my twitter handle is GargiVachaknavi. Go. Google. Troll. All the best. Filmmakers, keep you eyes on the deadline please. And heres a lovely reason to continue to do what we do: https://youtube/watch?v=GUuXAHfQz7k All the best.
