a song before bed (i once interviewed aimee mann and i asked her about this song and the fact that its been called the saddest song shes ever written and she responded, Its a song where nothing bad has happened: its not somebody saying, Im sad because I broke up with someone -- its really about a deep inner ennui and this complete inability to move forward and not know why you cant move and not know why youre stuck. Its about not really knowing anything and having this sort of vague yearning that something could make you feel better, but also knowing that that wont work either.
