(aka Bill Quinn) Its time to sing along with Bill during this edition of Christmas Factoids! I thought it might be fun to look at some of the biggest selling Christmas albums of all time through the decades. So, with all apologies and love to Casey Kasem, lets get back to the countdown! *Through the mid to late 1940s Bing Crosby ruled the airwaves with Merry Christmas from Bing Crosby *The 1950s began with Bing once more atop the Christmas charts but the decade saw huge holiday LPs from Mario Lanza, The Robert Shaw Chorale, Lawrence Welk, Mitch Miller and of course Elvis Presley and Elvis Christmas Album. *The 1960s once again found Mitch Miller at the top of the holiday charts, but then the golden throats of Andy Williams and Johnny Mathis appeared with their releases, as did Barbra Streisand and Glen Campbell among others. *The 1970s saw a marked change when big pop and rock hits began raking in huge LP sales numbers and the Jackson 5 and Partridge Family were among the holiday chart toppers at the beginning of the decade. Later acts like Elvis Presley, John Denver and The Muppets made their debuts. *In the 1980s the Star Wars craze swept us all into its orbit when the year began with Christmas in the Stars: Star Wars Christmas Album by Meco as a big hit. The decade would later see country stars making huge headway including Kenny Rogers, George Strait, Alabama and Dolly Parton. But, A Very Special Christmas from a host of artists in 1987, and A Fresh Aire Christmas by Mannheim Steamroller in 1988 were smashes! Well stop there and continue the rest of the countdown another time, but how about a hit from one 1978 LP that touched our hearts and continues today as one of the great Christmas LPs of all time. From Christmas Portrait here are The Carpenters... ow.ly/EGZGq
