#ane #IslamicNE CALL FOR PAPERS The peer-reviewed journal Comparative Islamic Studies (Equinox) is publishing a thematic issue dedicated to the concepts of connectivity and mobility in archaeological and material culture studies pertaining to the Islamic world. A call for papers is hereby issued for scholarly research articles on any aspect related to this field and with new ideas and/or results to disseminate. Submissions must adhere to the following criteria: · Comparative Islamic Studies is a top-ranking academic journal that focuses on integrating Islamic studies into the more general theoretical and methodological boundaries of liberal arts disciplines with an emphasis on those disciplines most closely aligned with the contemporary study of religion (e.g. anthropology, art history, classics, comparative literature, history, philosophy, political science, psychology and sociology). However, the idea behind this initiative is to introduce the journal’s traditional readership to the validity and usefulness of archaeology and material culture studies as part of the ‘Islamic studies’ umbrella. The intention is to further stimulate interdisciplinary approaches to Islam as a cultural phenomenon. · The specific theme within this disciplinary framework is variegated approaches to the concepts of connectivity and mobility in archaeological and material culture studies. The subject matter is free as long as it deals with a cultural sphere related to the Islamic world, but it is a crucial that the contribution is angled according to these concepts. · Particular attention will be given to articles, which reflect how Islamic materials can challenge and contribute to generic categories, theories and questions of method in the general study of religion and culture. Contributions are to be explicitly comparative in their focus and scope, and should clearly articulate both the reasons for selecting to compare certain phenomena and the theoretical conclusions to be drawn from the comparison. Comparisons may be between Islamic and non-Islamic materials or within and among Islamic materials. Attention to Islamic materials from outside the central Arabic lands is of special interest, as are comparisons which stress the diversity of Islam as it interacts with changing human conditions. Articles may also concentrate on the methodological and theoretical implications of doing comparative analysis. If you are interested in contributing original ideas or research, please submit an abstract of maximum 300 words, along with a provisional title, and the contributor’s name, title, institutional affiliation and current contact email. Abstracts should be submitted to guest-editor Kristoffer Damgaard (University of Copenhagen) at before September 9th 2013. Contributions selected for publication will be informed immediately hereafter, and will subsequently have until January 15th to complete the manuscripts. More specific guidelines will be provided to the selected contributors; however, contributions should be between 4000-8000 words in length. The use of graphics and images (incl. colour) is encouraged and not subject to limitations (within reason). All contributions will be subject to anonymous peer-review. We expect the issue to be published next summer.
