article by Chris Dupuis: Renaud’s own work les reines orphelines appears alongside Gagnon’s as part of the evening’s double bill. A piece for two women he describes as “two solos living in the same space,” it was inspired by French author Camille Laurens’s Les Fiancées du Diable, which proposes three ways men can view women: as lover, mother or predator. “I was curious how these ways of men seeing women could be taken to a level of images,” Renaud says. “As a choreographer, I’m more interested in images than movement, and women have such a range of ways they can express themselves.” Using an odd assemblage of costumes and props, including lampshades, high heels and crushed beets, Renaud has created a piece that plays more like a series of photographs than choreography. “There’s a lot of talk in the contemporary dance world about how gay men can end up treating women as objects on stage,” he says. “But I’m not trying to play Barbies, dressing my dancers up in different outfits. I’m interested in the spectrum of expression women have at their disposal and how they can use it to say different things. For me, that is really beautiful.” Kloz ur ez; sho me wut u gut and les reines orphelines Sat, June 15 and Sun, June 16, 9pm Arts Court, 2 Daly Ave, Suite 200 Ottawa ottawadancedirective.org xtra.ca/public/Ottawa/Deeper_and_deeper_through_dance-13733.aspx
