assalam alaikum respected members ! Here is the technique to write a precis. I hope that it will facilitate you. 1. What is precis writing? it is a frequently asked question. The simple answer to this question is : THE SKILL OF COMPOSITION, TO WRITE IN A VERY SIMPLE AND PRECISE WAY. 2. What is the METHOD of precis writing ? a. One third of the total passage must be the precis of the passage. b. Count the words of the actual paragraph. c. Do casual reading, that is : --) By reading the passage you will get hints regarding the passage. --) First reading will give you the idea or theme of the passage. d. SKIMMING: --) It means reading the passage 3 or 4 times to find out the title or topic sentence. e. INTENSIVE READING: --) It is the keen and detailed reading. --) With reading you can underline the different ideas in the passage which will later on become the precis on the passage in your own words. f. SIFTING: --) It is basically collection of ideas in the passage. --) Precis depends upon sifting process. --) While reading important points are sifted out from rest of the passage. and it is done by underlying the lines of the passage. --) It is a mathematical process that sifts only relevant and precise points. g. FIRST DRAFT OR ROUGH DRAFT: --) Write sifted material on rough page / side. --) Copy the underlined sentences in the original sequence of passage. --) Write sifted material in your own and simple words. --) It is required to follow the sequence of ideas of original passage and try to use one word connectors. --) After writing the rough draft, count the words and check the difference. h. FINAL DRAFT: --) After writing rough draft, write final draft and bring the required changes. --) Target of words should not exceed. --) Final draft must me in your own words and must not convey the sense of borrowing of words from original passage.
