awijit08.wordpress/2014/12/31/my-highlights-of-2014/ My highlights of 2014 Another year comes to an end. Tomorrows dawn will begin with another new year, another celebration and with umpteen possibilities for next 365 days. However, its always a good opportunity to take stock of the past year. As a proud citizen, after having all the flak about our failures as a nation, here are my top 6 events of 2014 ( it was 5 earlier but due to Dhonis immediate retirement, i had to change it to 6) which we can proudly boast about. 1. Narendra Modi- I am not a politics buff, but I was glued to TV when Mr. Narendra Modi was taking the oath as the 15th prime minister of India on 26th may 2014. It was an absolute joy watching a prime minister addressing just like a common man and speaking his heart out. I dont know about the inevitable changes which he has promised to bring but this man has taught us that, if a Chaiwala can become the prime minister of a nation than anything and everything is possible. I hope that unlike others, Mr. Modis actions will speak louder than his words, and we will see a better India in the years to come. However, he cant do it alone, its us the compatriots who will have to cooperate him. 2. Mangalyaan- I felt a great sense of pride when Mangalyaan was launched to Mars and ISRO became only the fourth space agency to reach Mars after the Soviet space program, NASA, and the Europian Space Agency. India also became the first Asian country to have achieved this; we became the first country to reach Mars in the maiden attempt and spent the least amount of money in doing it. While addressing ISRO scientists in Bangalore prime minister said, “our scientists have achieved this at a cost that is lesser than some of the Hollywood movies.” Kudos to all of those industrious ISRO scientists who made it possible through their sheer hard work, we as a nation salute you all. 3. Kailash Satyarthi – I represent here the sound of silence. The cry of innocence. And, the face of invisibility, said Mr. Kailash Satyarthi while receiving, “the Nobel peace award” at Stockholm concert hall, Sweden, He became the 7th Indian to win Nobel Peace Prize. A very little known Indian got the worlds most famous award along with Pakistani young activist Malala Yousafazi for their “selfless work for the suppression of children and young people and for the right to education of all children”. Watching an Indian speaking at the world stage was admittedly a proud moment for the nation. 4. A year of leagues for Indian sports- Is cricket the only sport in India from which one can make a lot of money and fame? Cricket certainly is the undisputed king of Indian sports, but the advent of all the sports leagues in India is a revolution. It has given a ray of hope to many of those sportsmen and women to work hard and make a living out of it. Just like IPL, we have ISL( Indian soccer league), KPL (Kabaddi premier league), IBL (Indian Badminton League) and IPTL (international tennis premier league). All thanks to the celebrities from all over the nation who took the initiative and bought the teams in different sports altogether. The live coverage of all the tournaments gave a grand exposure to hundreds of those sportspersons to showcase their talent to the world in their respective field. Being a sportsperson myself, I understand the hard work and sacrifices one has to make in any sport and to get the rewards for that is the ultimate thing. I wish and hope that just like 2014 all these leagues will not only sustain but would be a tremendous success in the years to come. May the adrenaline levels of our enthusiasm never dip in this cricket-mad country. 5.India declared a polio-free nation by WHO - The disease that used to cripple more than 50,000 children in the country every year has almost vanished. On 27th March 2014, India was declared a polio-free nation among ten other countries in the south east Asian region by WHO. Not to forget Unicef and the other organizations who worked day in day out. Home- to - home, just to make sure that no child was left out, and of course Amitabh Bachchan and Sachin Tendulkar for their advertisements to spread awareness about the disease. 6.Dhoni retires from test cricket – A small town man who ruled the world cricket. Timing can be a bi*** for many, but for this man it has always been perfect. Everything, either good or bad comes to an end someday, and Yesterday was a perfect day for him to bid adieu. Just to put things in perspective, when Dhoni made his Test debut, “Sachin Tendulkar was already 15-year-old veteran in test cricket and Dhoni made no less name and fame than the great man. The void will never be fulfilled. The magical moments of your test cricket journey will forever linger with us.
