The District is made up of four communities: Bolton Hill, Charles North, Madison Park and Mount Vernon/Belvedere which is managed by a Management Authority. Each resident and stakeholder is a member of the Benefits District and is represented by the Board of Directors -- also comprised mainly of residents and stakeholders from these neighborhoods. The Districts efforts are funded by taxpayer approved property tax surcharge. The special community benefits district was created by voter referendum in an effort to make our neighborhoods stronger, better places to live and work. Job Description: The Green Crew Lead will supervise a team of 2-4 employees in the stewardship of community parkland and green space within the Midtown Community Benefits District. The role requires engagement of park users and management of volunteer groups implementing park stewardship and planting projects. 1. Park Stewardship: Perform ongoing park maintenance, including but not limited to: weeding, pruning, fertilizing, mulching, planting, seasonal cleanup, and trash removal Operate power equipment, such as mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, tillers, and ensure that all equipment is in good working order through preventative maintenance Manage the watering of trees within the District and in neighboring communities that have entered into contracts with Midtown. Maintain good and productive relationships with our gardeners, neighbors, volunteers, City of Baltimore staff, and businesses Meet gardeners and visitors throughout the District with confidence, charm, and tact Attend and prepare for weekly meetings with the Midtown Management Team, and report on the status of the community garden network Work both independently and as part of a team Regularly inspect grounds; plan, and prioritize work accordingly Train and supervise team members in park maintenance Assist with executing Midtown projects throughout the District Be an ambassador for Midtown by promoting the organizations mission and goals Additional duties as assigned 2. Volunteer Coordination: Work with the Management Team to identify meaningful volunteer opportunities Develop and manage volunteer projects Provide oversight and recognition of volunteer efforts in the field Assist the Superintendent with administrative tasks and planning Skills and Qualifications: The ideal candidate will possess the following: A degree in Horticulture or related field from an accredited college or horticulture program OR three or more years of hands-on horticulture experience Significant experience using mowing equipment, and other landscape equipment The ability to repair and maintain power equipment and hand tools The ability to work independently and unsupervised as well as work cooperatively and demonstrate leadership in groups A positive attitude (essential), willingness to be flexible, and a commitment to achieving the goals of The Midtown Community Benefits District Excellent people skills; must enjoy working with diverse groups of people, comfortable and competent working with committees, and speaking to the public A keen eye for detail; an awareness of and concern for the aesthetic quality in all aspects of landscape management The ability to utilize computer software to maintain a database/inventory of green needs throughout the district Other Requirements: Ability to motivate, train, and manage a crew Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work, in all weather Ability to adapt to a quickly changing work environment Experience using and maintaining landscaping equipment Ability to execute tasks efficiently and solve problems creatively, with limited resources Enthusiasm for and experience in horticulture or landscape management Interest in urban ecology and environmental issues Organized and attentive to detail Valid and clean drivers license Ability to work weekend and evening shifts as necessary Compensation: This is a full time position with a salary of $29,000 - $33,000 depending upon experience.
