🎬 🍷🎬 🍷cant wait for Alfian Saats q&a with Kirsten Tan and Shijie Tan following this special screening of their Singapore International Film Festival award-winning short films (Dahdi & Not Working Today) at The Projector. excerpting alfians post prior: its exciting for me that the two winning films mentioned above deal with subject matter that looks outwards--at refugees and migrant workers (...) Because our (independent) films might get right what TV gets wrong, but the bigger picture is that there also other things we as a country get wrong. One of it is our siege mentality--a prepossessing idea that we are so vulnerable that we become blind to the vulnerability of others. Another is the idea that a first world status is something to be jealously defended, rather than carrying with it the obligation to help those who lack. A young nation will inevitably produce a lot of introspective work, but introspection can turn to narcissism if we do not constantly seek out, with curiosity and humility, the stories beyond the borders of the self. loci of outwards v. inwards / siege mentality v. first world status / continuum of introspection v. narcissism = i think the dialogue will also edify parallel issues in other art forms, across writing and visual art, so come one come all. there will also be quality wine courtesy of Taberna Wine Academy, so we can in vino veritas. its also pretty hard to get to watch local shorts (outside of dear The Substation) so the other awesome thing here is The Projector, a revamped independent cinema at golden mile thats committed to screening rad international and local work outside of mainstream cinema diets (much needed in sg!). the screening will be entry by donation of any amount at all, and the filmmakers are donating all proceeds to The Projector to support their ethos, so it will be a night of film, libations, rigour and swirling good karma. 🎬 🍷🎬 🍷
