#cbcmar Evening update on Arthur. Still maintaining as a very strong Category 1 hurricane off the coastline off the Carolinas, Arthur continues to pick up strength drawing on the very warm ocean waters in its vicinity. While forecast to reach Category 2 strength late tonight/early tomorrow as it reaches the Maritimes it will be transitioning to a post-tropical system and interacting with a large trough of low pressure present over us. What does this mean? In a broad sense not much. The system will still be accompanied by some very strong winds and heavy rainfall. The heaviest rain will be experienced just to the west of the track of the storm and the strongest winds just to the east. My current target area for the heaviest rain include much of southern/central New Brunswick, PEI, and possibly parts of the southwest and north of Nova Scotia. There have been some widespread model guidance suggesting rainfall amounts of 50 to 100 mm, even some forecast models pushing 100+ mm. That is a ton of rain to come down in the span of 24 hours. Flooding is a big concern with this storm. As for the winds. Based on the current track it does look like the strongest winds will be most widespread in Nova Scotia. Sustained winds of 60 to 70 km/h look likely with gusts reaching or exceeding 100 km/h. The winds will first be very strong from the south and then later from the west/northwest as the storm begins to clear. Scattered power outages could be seen and the strong winds will give rise to a risk of a storm surge especially around the Atlantic coastline of Nova Scotia. Check your local tide times at: waterlevels.gc.ca/eng those are the times on Saturday that you will want to be especially careful. I guess the good news here is that the entire storm looks like it will be clear by Sunday morning so the weekend wont be a complete write off.
