durbar square, kathmandu from our hotel, the next day, we walked to durbar square in kathmandu. on our way, we passed the palace of the kumari, nepals living goddess. to be a kumari, one has to belong to the caste of buddha, she must also have a complete set of teeth and must never have been sick. she must also be very brave. unfortunately, we had no time to wait for her appearance in order to be glimpsed by a huge crowd. it is said that the kumari is so powerful that just a glance from her will give one a very good fortune. the kumari is prepubescent and when she menstruates it is believed durga leaves her body and so a new search for a kumari begins. surrounding durbar square are palaces and temples, marvelous spectacles in themselves. in the square is the statue of hanuman, the monkey devotee of rama. to be continued
