from Across from Lapeyrouse... It was three o’clock on Jou’vert morning. Jeneva had not slept since five the previous morning, but there was no way she was going to miss this. Jou’vert was the time when carnival started in earnest. It was the time when the country pulsated with one beat, as the rebellious incarnations of its past, met the joyous abandon of its present. Trinidad and Tobago was home to a roiling mass of contradictions. Its people were hedonistic and religious, superstitious and bold, irreverent and strict, lustful and pious. And at Jou’vert, everything collided.
