Weekend Travel Headache? A system will move from the Southern Plains to the Southeast Coast as we head through the weekend. Numerical models forecast another piece of energy in the northern jet stream to move to the New England Coast Sunday as well. There is significant uncertainty as to how these two systems will interact and how much moisture will be circulated back into the cold air. Current models runs show the Northeast corridor along I-95 to stay mostly an all rain event. Portions of the Central Appalachians through Interior New England and Upstate New York could see several inches of snow in the Saturday night through Monday time frame. (MORE: Weekend Storm May Bring Snow, Severe Storms, Holiday Travel Woes) More Sierra Snow A system moving across California from the Pacific Tuesday night through Wednesday will bring more mountain snow to the Sierra. As much as 12 to 18 of snow is likely at the highest elevations of the Range. Snow levels will be 5,000 to 6,000 ft. allowing some of that snowfall to impact the I-80 corridor through Donner Pass. The snow will lift out across the Great Basin through the Colorado Rockies Wednesday into Thursday with several inches at higher elevations. The first system brought rain, some of it heavy, to California Monday. Another one will continue to push through Tuesday into Wednesday. Yet another storm system is expected Friday. While the rain isnt as heavy as it was with last weeks storm, its still been enough to cause some problems. There were at least 13 reports of debris flows (including mudslides and rockslides) Monday in the San Francisco Bay Area and Monterey County. One of the slides blocked a portion of State Route 1 near Tamalpais, while another affected an exit ramp off of Interstate 280 near San Bruno. At least an additional 2 inches of rain, with some locally higher amounts in the mountains below snow level, can be expected through the weekend in parts of northern California, western Oregon and western Washington. In northern and central California, nearly a foot of snow is expected to accumulate in the higher elevations of the Sierra. (FORECASTS: Seattle | Portland | San Francisco | Sacramento | Los Angeles | San Diego) One major difference between this weeks storms and last weeks storm will be the wind. Winds will be far lighter this time around, so power outages should be minimal. Rainfall Helpful, but Drought Remains The rain and snow have been welcome in California where, as of Dec. 9, 80 percent of the state is in either extreme or exceptional drought, the two highest categories of the U.S. Drought Monitor. At the start of January 2014, only 28 percent of California was in extreme drought. While the rains in California have been generous recently, they are far from enough to put a big dent in the drought. During the first week of December, many locations, including downtown Los Angeles, broke daily rainfall records for Dec. 2 dating back to the 1960s. However, those records are among the easiest to beat in the winter months. The Weather Channel analyzed Los Angeles daily rainfall records for December, January and February, and found that only six of the other 90 days had lower (and therefore easier-to-break) daily rainfall record amounts. By the second week of December, Los Angeles picked up 1.5 inches of additional rainfall. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works tweeted Dec. 3 that its system had captured 1.16 billion gallons of water, enough to supply 28,000 people for a year. In the Dec. 12 storm, LACDPW captured and conserved another 1.8 billion gallons of rainwater, which is enough water to supply 44,000 people for a year. This number pales in comparison, though, to the fact that Los Angeles County has more than 10 million residents. (MORE: What Will Winter Hold For Drought-Plagued California) Even with the recent rain, Los Angeles has had a little more than half its average rainfall since July 1, 2011 -- 23 inches short of the average of nearly 48 inches. San Francisco, which has had even more generous rainfall recently than Los Angeles, still lags nearly 22 inches below its average rainfall of 77 inches for that same period. (MORE: 2013 Was Californias Record Driest Year) Nonetheless, San Francisco can take heart in the fact that December is already the 17th-wettest on record since records began in 1849 -- incidentally, among the longest periods of weather record-keeping in the country. Sierra Snowpack: Hopeful Gains Enlarge The inset map at right shows the snow water equivalent for Dec. 15 across the three sections of the Sierra Nevada, expressed as a percentage of average for this time of year. All three sections had healthy increases of 5 to 23 percentage points since Dec. 11, and the statewide average increased from 32 percent to 41 percent. The Sierra Nevada snowpack is important because meltwater from the Sierra is a major contributor to the water supply of many major California cities, including Los Angeles (via the Owens River Valley) and San Francisco (via the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir on the Tuolumne River) light rain diffrent parts of canada and usa and mexcio 30-40% chance of ligt rain 1-3 inches of light rain heavy rain for western bc canada western wahington oregon northwestern california state southern and eastern northern texas state southern oklanhoma louisania southern manie state newfoundland canada 60-100% heavy rain 3-12 inches of rain flooding possbilty for those area winter snow storm for washington oregon truckee donner pass california state northern manie state marinetime canada 6-20 inches of snow blowing and drifting snow viisbilty be at 0 very dangerous drving snow pack and whiteout and icy roads condition snowfall for higher mountain or flatland area for alaska state yukon canada bc canada mountains western alberta canada washington state oregon california idaho newvada az state new mexcio utah colorado western wy state southwestern montana state southern nebraska state kansas northern oklanhoma southern iowa missouri state northern minnsota state 4 great lake area wisconsin il state gary indania michigan state parts of ontario canada pa state ny state upper eastern state quebec canada marinetime canada 3-12 inches of snow blowing and drifting snow visibilty be at 0 very dangerous drving snow pack and whiteout and icy roads condition frezzing rain for washington state oregon state all way quebec marinetime canada 1-3 inches of frezzing rain very dangerous drving and icy roads condition none sever thunderstorm for southern texas state southern california state border line mexcio maybe sever isolated thunderstorm high wind warning for western alaska state all way nu canada parts of western canada upper mid western state western state all way texas oklanhoma kansas nebraska state iowa state nc state virgina west virgina state 4 great lake area wisconsin il state indania ohio ky state west virgina michigan state ontario canada pa state ny state northern quebec canada 16 or 36 mph winds windchill warning for northwestern alaska state yukon canada nwt canada nu canada western canada northwestern ontario canada minnsota state upper mid western state wy state nebraska state iowa colorado kansas missouri 4 great lake area il state wisconsin northern michigan state northern quebec canada -26 or 26 very cold weather yall frost warning for alaska state all way nu canada western canada minnsota state upper mid western state all way 4 great lake area for wisconsin il northern michigan state northern ontario canada northern quebec canada black roads icy condition and very dangerous drving on icy bridge condition foggy or ice foggy condition bc canada western canada nevada idaho montana wy state western canada all way virgina state washington dc 4 great lake area wisconsin michigan state ontario canada ny state new england state upper mid western state quebec canada eastern canada visibilty be at 0-2 miles very dangerous drving and thick foggy or ice foggy condition right till by morning be caution keep eyes on it yall tune weather channel weather network wx cb radio scanner weather radio cell phone desktop laptop tablet weather yall be safe drive safe god bless yall bigger both thumbs up drivers everybody else here :) 10-4
